Minorities in Texas are less likely than white Texans to own their own homes.

Citing U.S. Census data, the Texas Tribune reports the state’s metro areas have some of the largest racial imbalances among homeowners.

Statewide, only 28 percent of Hispanics own their home compared to 60 percent of white Texans.

A shortage of affordable housing, credit problems and lack of savings for down payments are among barriers blamed for creating the demographic divide.
