BIG SONIA

For years, Sonia Warshawski (91) has been an inspirational public speaker at schools and prisons, where her stories of surviving the Holocaust as a teenager have inspired countless people who once felt their own traumas would leave them broken forever. "Big Sonia" explores what it means to be a survivor and how intergenerational trauma affects families and generations.

 
LORETTA LYNN: MY STORY IN MY WORDS

Loretta Lynn: My Story in My Words | March 15 | 3PM

2021 marks the 50th anniversary of “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” the Loretta Lynn song that became a book, a feature film, and an indelible part of popular culture. Like so many other songs written by Lynn, the lyrics told the story of her life and spoke to women who struggled to make ends meet. Lynn’s simple, straightforward song stories gave legitimacy to the joys, heartaches, struggles and triumphs.

Beyond The Powder: The Legacy Of The First Women's Cross-Country Air Race follows the 2014 Air Race Classic racers as they make their way across the country, while telling the story of the original race of 1929, also known as the Powder Puff Derby.

For 191 years, the Supreme Court of the United States was populated only by men. When President Ronald Reagan nominated Sandra Day O'Connor as the first female justice in 1981, the announcement dominated the news. Time Magazine's cover proclaimed, "Justice at Last," and she received unanimous Senate approval.

Lady Bird Johnson earned a special place in the hearts of all Americans because of her tireless work to preserve and restore the beauty of this country's roadsides, open spaces and parks. This documentary looks at her accomplishments through the eyes of her friends and those who helped realize her ambitious goals.

Independent Lens: Storming Caesar's Palace | March 20 | 10PM

After losing her job as a hotel worker in Las Vegas, Ruby Duncan joined a welfare rights group of mothers who defied notions of the “welfare queen.” In a fight for guaranteed income, Ruby and other equality activists took on the Nevada mob in organizing a massive protest that shut down Caesars Palace.

This film documents local businesswoman Rosemary Kowalski’s life along with the coming of age of San Antonio, which helped her build a leading catering company. The program also highlights the strength and success of The RK Group today under the direction and vision of President and CEO Greg Kowalski.

Fannie Lou Hamer's America: An America Reframed Special | March 28 | 9:30PM

Fannie Lou Hamer's America explores and celebrates the lesser-known life of a Mississippi sharecropper-turned-human-rights-activist and one of the Civil Rights Movement’s greatest leaders. Through the layering of audio recordings and archival video footage of her powerful speeches, soul-stirring songs and impassioned pleas for equal rights, Fannie Lou Hamer tells her extraordinary story in her own words.

JONI MITCHELL: THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS PRIZE FOR POPULAR SONG

Joni Mitchell: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song  | March 31 | 8PM

After getting her start in coffee shops, Joni Mitchell went on to set a new standard, marrying music and lyrics with such songs as “Both Sides, Now.” While her early material is often categorized as “folk,” she became a household name with music that defies categorization.

American Masters: Roberta Flack follows the music icon from a piano lounge through her rise to stardom. From “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” to “Killing Me Softly,” Flack’s virtuosity was inseparable from her commitment to civil rights. Detailing her story in her own words, the film features exclusive access to Flack’s archives and interviews with Rev. Jesse Jackson, Peabo Bryson and more.
