PBS Summertime is Learning Time

Dear Families,

Staying inside can make getting exercise a little more challenging, but this week we are sharing some great ideas for staying active, healthy, and happy. Keep in mind that we are more likely to exercise when it is an activity we enjoy. Find activities that you and your family enjoy and make these fun activities regular events, like going for a daily walk or doing popcorn jumping jacks every day! Here are some great ideas from Arthur Family Health: Fitness Tips for Kids and Fitness Tips for Grown Ups.

Does having an at-home dance party count as exercise? Absolutely! Find your favorite songs, explore some songs that are new to you too, and let’s get moving!

With appreciation,
KLRN Education Team

Here are fun learning activities around the theme of Moving & Learning for your child of any age!

Infant/Toddler Activities

  • Animal Yogaen español Yoga
Watch the video together, then try some of the yoga poses you saw (replay segments as needed). Tell kids that even though yoga is a slow, quiet exercise, it still helps us grow strong and healthy.
El yoga desarrolla la fuerza, estira los músculos y calma la mente.
  • Pool Noodle Obstacle Course
This easily customizable pool noodle obstacle course is perfect for a kid’s play date, party or a family time in the yard. You can customize the course for your child’s age level.
  • Workin’ It Out
Staying active is an important part of your overall health. Find out the best ways to keep your family active and having fun! This activity can be customized to the child’s age and physical abilities.

Preschool Activities

  • Dance Partyen español Baile de caderas
Dancing is a great way for kids to get exercise, express their creativity, communicate feelings, and enjoy music. Try some of these dance ideas together!
Usted puede ayudar a los niños a seguir instrucciones y a aprender a controlar su cuerpo.
  • Create a Literacy Obstacle Course
In this obstacle course, kids will strengthen one of their most important muscles – their brain – as they engage in alphabetizing, rhyming, spelling, and movement.
  • Host a Family Olympics
Help your child create her own Home Olympics! Try to hold your event outside, or put mats on the floor indoors. Remind children that the object is not to win, but to have FUN! Help your children plan and create a safe course they can go over, under, around, and through.

Elementary Age Activities

  • 20 Crunches: Deal or No Deal opcion en español
In this video, available in English and Spanish, students pick a card with an exercise such as 20 crunches on it. They then decide whether to take the deal by showing a thumbs-up or to decline the deal by showing a thumbs-down. Students may pass once and then must perform the exercise on the second card they select.
  • Vacation Fitness opcion en español
This Kindergarten through 5th grade activity, available in English and Spanish, makes for a very relatable and fun fitness activity! Students use their bodies to move through the motions of going on a vacation. Starting with picking a destination, students then act out packing, boarding the plane, and finally getting to their destination- the beach.
  • Kids In Action: Beantown Jumpers
The Beantown Jumpers, a Boston-area Double Dutch jump rope team, fosters healthy and active lifestyles through sports and athletics. Watch them train, in this video from Arthur: "Arthur Weighs In."
  • Dance: Floor Paths
In dance, a floor path - or pathway - is the "trail" left as the dancer travels through a space. Floor paths can be straight, curved, or a combination of the two. Choreographers try to create a variety of floor paths in order to provide visual interest or to create emotional or psychological impact. For example, a dancer moving directly toward the audience (advancing, coming closer) may have a different effect than one moving away from the audience (retreating).

Middle/High School Activities

  • Navajo Sash Dance
The Pollen Trail Dancers from the Navajo Reservation north of Joseph City, Arizona, perform a dance in this video from the Dance Arts Toolkit series. The dance is based on the story of Spider Woman’s teaching of weaving to the Navajo people.
  • SciGirls: Take It In Stride
The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommends that youth (ages 6-17) engage in at least one hour of physical activity daily. When it comes to walking, studies show that for 6- to 12-year-olds, girls need 12,000 steps/day and boys need 15,000 steps/day to stay healthy. One fun way to get kids stepping is to measure stride length. It's an important factor for speed in sports, such as soccer, and can even help kids estimate distances without a ruler!
  • Roller Coaster Physics
5th and 6th grade STEM teacher Donna Migdol brings math and science to life with a design challenge that introduces students to the concepts of budgeting and safety testing. Students learn about potential and kinetic energy and about Newton's Laws of Motion as they troubleshoot their way through designing a roller coaster.
  • Health Effects of Zero Gravity
Learn about the harmful health effects of living in zero gravity and a potential solution in this video from NOVA scienceNOW: "Can We Make It to Mars?" NASA astronaut Jerry Linenger describes the bone and muscle loss he experienced during his five-month stay aboard the Russian Space Station. Host Neil deGrasse Tyson visits neurophysiologist Janna Kaplan to learn how artificial gravity could mitigate the risks of space travel. The rotation of a spinning room creates a centrifugal force that pushes the body against the wall, simulating gravity; if such a room were onboard a spacecraft, it could help astronauts preserve bone and muscle mass.
  • Interview with Camp EAGR Director about Epilepsy and Camp
Mike Radell is director of a camp for kids with epilepsy and their siblings. He explains what epilepsy is and how the kids have a regular camp experience knowing they have the supports in place as needed.

We hope you enjoyed some of these activities. If you follow KLRN on your facebook account please be sure to share your activities and use the #KLRNeducates and #KLRNLearnatHome tags.
