KLRN Learn at Home

KLRN strives to provide valuable educational content to every family in our viewing area, from great drama, world-class music, in-depth news, fascinating "how-to" programs and, best of all — non-violent educational programs for your children.

During these uncertain times, KLRN is adapting and creating educational resources in an easy-to-follow format. We aim to provide educational content and resources that support every family in our community.

With these daily blog posts, you will find two PBS Kids programs featured, and accompanying educational activities that will help extend learning into your home. In addition to that we have added a new 4 PM time slot that aims at providing some content for older school age students. You will find resources tied to each of these programs aired daily with lessons from our PBS LearningMedia site.

We hope that this will provide your family a way to enjoy the PBS shows you love and extend the learning into your home.

All the best,
KLRN’s Education Team

  • Family Mobile
Illustrate a picture of each member of the family. Include the pet if the child has one. Cut out each family member. Glue each picture on strong paper or cardboard. Hang your pictures on a hanger with yarn or string to make a mobile. Print the last name on a piece of paper and fasten it to the hanger. Hang your mobile in the child’s room or above where they lay.
  • A New Family Tradition
Creating special traditions with your new blended family can help everyone feel more connected. It can also help ease children’s transitions between homes. Use this page with children to talk about and plan a new family routine or ritual.
  • From My Heart to Yours

Cyberchase

Thursday, May 7 at 6:30 AM and 3:30 PM

Trouble is brewing beneath Serene Greens! Hapo the earthworm needs help underground, but how can the CyberSquad possibly help their miniscule friend? With one zap of Digit's "shrinkray," the team shrinks to the size of tiny insects and portals underground.

They're literally IN the soil! The diminutive Matt, Jackie, Inez, and Digit come face-to-face with all sorts of critters that make up this thriving ecosystem. The only problem is Hapo's home turf, Bug Bayou, is anything but flourishing. The roots are mushy, the ground is clumpy and dry, and food is scarce, causing creatures to flee to healthier ground. Something is damaging Hapo's soil. But what? The CyberSquad digs in to get to the root of the problem.

Infant/Toddler

  • Itsy Bitsy Spider
Reciting the Itsy Bitsy Spider Rhyme to your baby will help them develop language skills such as, pronunciation and vocabulary context.
  • Creepy Crawlers Ladybugs
Paint the bottom of a paper bowl red. Stick black paper circles on it (for the spots). Add paper legs and head. Pipe cleaners can also be used for the legs.
  • Go on a Critter Collection Adventure
Explore a natural setting to find the perfect critter to collect. Then, keep it safe in a temporary home your child creates.

Preschool

  • Explore Nature on a Walk
Children can find all kinds of treasures everywhere! Plan a walk with your child and maybe a friend, too. You may not get very far, or move very quickly, but children can have a chance to look for things like leaves, tiny bugs, stones, and squirrels.
  • Meet the Trees
Trees are all around us and are an important part of nature, even in big cities! You can help your child learn about trees and the animals that use them by exploring your backyard or neighborhood.

Grade K-3

  • Soil Investigation | Cyberchase

  • What Is Soil?
Explore soil and how soil types vary when found in different landscapes on Earth’s surface in this video created by NASA eClips and WGBH. Use the video to observe soils found in different landscape environments and describe why this natural resource is essential to life on Earth. Background reading, activity and discussion questions.
