From September 15 to October 15, KLRN celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with a lineup of featured programming that highlights the rich culture, diversity, and historical contributions of the Hispanic community in the U.S., Puerto Rico, and beyond.

Discover how Moreno defied her humble upbringing and racism to become one of a select group of Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award winners. Explore her 70-year career with new interviews, clips of her iconic roles and scenes of the star on set today.

 
Jesse Treviño: The Artist. The Man.

SEPT. 18 | 9PM | Jesse Treviño: The Artist. The Man.

An intimate look at the life of renowned San Antonio artist Jesse Treviño. The film, created by journalist Randy Beamer, includes stories and memories shared by friends and Jesse himself, some of his personal collections, and never-before-seen footage. Jesse’s talent can be seen all around the city, such as the nine-story mural, The Spirit of Healing, at Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital.

After 20 years of living in the United States, an undocumented family decides to return home. Little do they know it will be the most difficult journey of their lives. Sansón and Me

Filmmaker Rodrigo Reyes wants to document Sansón's story, an immigrant serving life in prison. Unable to film Sansón, the documentary creatively shares his narrative through reenactments of his letters, featuring his own family as actors.

The New Latinos

Until World War II, Latino immigration to the United States was overwhelmingly Mexican-American. Now three new waves bring large-scale immigration from Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.

Meet the Latina leaders who are working in our community, from large corporations to corner bakeries. Join us as we hear firsthand from women who have broken stereotypes and barriers to reach success - and what they learned along the way. 

 
Pati's Mexican Table: Guayabera World

SEPT. 23 | 3:30PM | Pati's Mexican Table: Guayabera World

In Tekit, or “The Capital of the Guayabera,” Pati encounters a tale of sons going against their father’s wishes to follow their own path. Pati meets Eliodoro Xicum, a farmer’s son who went against his father to build a family business making the iconic Guayabera shirts. Then she meets his son, Elio, who chose to become a chef and created a dish that resembles a Guayabera in honor of his father.

SEPT. 25 | 9PM | Independent Lens: Children of Las Brisas

In Venezuela, amidst a backdrop of poverty, murder, and corruption, the El Sistema youth orchestra offers children hope and the opportunity to pursue a life of art in spite of the harshness of the society around them. Yet the country’s spiraling collapse and political repression threatens the musicians’ dreams of a better life.

 
Uýra - The Rising Forest

SEPT. 25 | 10:30PM | POV: Uýra – The Rising Forest 

Uýra shares ancestral knowledge with Indigenous youth in the Amazon to promote the significance of identity and place, threatened by Brazil's oppressive political regime. Through dance, poetry, and stunning characterization, Uýra confronts historical racism, transphobia, and environmental destruction, while emphasizing the interdependence of humans and the environment.

In the 1960s and 1970s a generation of Mexican Americans, frustrated by persistent discrimination and poverty, find a new way forward, through social action and the building of a new “Chicano” identity.

SEPT. 27 | 4PM | Latino Americans: Peril and Promise

From Cuba a second wave of refugees enters the United States – the Mariel exodus – floods Miami . The same decade sees the sudden arrival of hundreds of thousands of Central Americans (Salvadorans, Guatemalans, and Nicaraguans)

SEPT. 28 | 2PM | Colombia-Wild and Free: From the Pacific to the Andes

Journey to the largely uninhabited Pacific coast of Colombia, where humpback whales give birth and fish hunt crabs in the mangrove forests. Then ascend to snow-capped Andean volcanoes, home to stunning spectacled bears, condors and hummingbirds.

SEPT. 28 | 4PM | Wonders of Mexico: Burning North

A journey across Northern Mexico reveals a desert rich in life. From prairie dogs fighting snakes, bats hunting scorpions and tiny owls living in giant cacti, its animals have found clever ways to survive against the odds.

SEPT. 29 | 9PM | American Masters: A Song for Cesar

Trace the life and legacy of labor activist Cesar Chavez. Through interviews with Maya Angelou, Joan Baez, Carlos Santana and more, see how music and the arts were instrumental to the success of the social movement Chavez helped found, which mobilized thousands of farmworkers across the U.S.

SEPT. 30 | 3:30PM | Pati's Mexican Table: Flavors of Merida

Pati explores the vibrant streets of Yucatán’s capital, Mérida, in search of its flavors. She tries “the best tacos in Mérida” at Wayan’e. The aroma of freshly made cookies lures her to Dondé Fabric, where their globitos and bizcochitos are an important part of Mérida’s mornings. She has sorbet at a shop run by the same family for generations and tastes a unique Yucatecan liqueur at Casa D'Aristi.

Zoot Suit Riots

OCT. 2 | 9PM | American Experience: Zoot Suit Riots

In June 1943, Los Angeles erupted into the worst race riots in the city to date. For ten straight nights, American sailors armed with make-shift weapons cruised Mexican American neighborhoods in search of "zoot-suiters" - hip, young Mexican teens dressed in baggy pants and long-tailed coats. The military men dragged kids — some as young as twelve years old —  and viciously beat them.

In a striking new three-part series, Becoming Frida Kahlo strips away the myths to reveal the real Frida – a passionate and brilliant artist living through extraordinary times.

 
Roberto Clemente

Born in Puerto Rico, Clemente was an exceptional baseball player and humanitarian whose career sheds light on larger issues of immigration, civil rights and cultural change. He would die in a tragic plane crash in 1972.

El Equipo

Legendary U.S. anthropologist Dr. Clyde Snow sets out to train a new group of Latin American students in the use of forensic anthropology. Their goal: to investigate disappearances in Argentina during the “dirty war.” The group expands its horizons, traveling to El Salvador, Bolivia, and Mexico, doggedly working behind the scenes to establish the facts for the families of the victims.

Hecho in Mexico

Before becoming part of the U.S., Los Angeles was a Mexican city. This episode pays tribute to the city’s roots and features beloved Mexican and Mexican-American artists performing with Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil. Tune in to watch Rodrigo y Gabriela, Natalia Lafourcade and La Santa Cecilia, plus Los Ángeles Azules performing with YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) and Paolo Bortolameolli.
