KLRN sends our deepest condolences to our Hill Country neighbors who have been affected by the recent flooding.  You remain in our thoughts and our hearts during this difficult time and KLRN will be here as the weeks pass to assist how we can.

The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country's Flood Relief Fund  offers one way to help, with funds going directly to first responders, nonprofit organizations, and local government agencies who are working tirelessly on the ground.

It’s difficult to know how to explain tragic events to young children. It can also be hard to know how much information to share or if there is a "right way" to help them with their fears and anxieties.

There are ways to help children feel safer and more secure during a challenging time. KLRN has curated these resources in hopes of providing families with a starting place for difficult conversations around weather emergencies.

PBS RESOURCES FOR FAMILIES

  • When Something Scary Happens
PBS Resources to Help Families Cope in Emergencies and Other Challenging Times

  • Helping Children with Tragic Events in the News
In times of community or world-wide crisis, it's easy to assume that young children don't know what's going on. But one thing's for sure -- children are very sensitive to how their parents feel.

  • Draw Your Feelings Page
Daniel Tiger explains you can have lots of different feelings when something difficult or unexpected happens.

  • Sesame Workshop Emergency Resources
Hurricanes, storms, and other natural disasters can be difficult for young children who may not fully understand what’s going on around them. These tips, activities, and videos can help them feel safe, cope with emotions, and understand that there is hope for the future.

  • Here for Each Other
Sesame Street Resource regarding Support after a weather emergency.

  • Meet the Helpers
Many children have questions and can feel uneasy when emergencies occur in their communities. The Meet the Helpers toolkit is designed to introduce “helpers” and explain the role they play in emergency situations. Included in the toolkit are videos and hands-on activities that provide educators and families with developmentally appropriate resources for young children.

We hope these resources will be helpful as you have these conversations with your children or children in your care. Our hearts remain with all of those touched by the tragic weather event in the Hill Country.

When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping." To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words and am comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers - so many caring people in this world. - Fred Rogers
