KLRN Learn at Home

KLRN strives to provide valuable educational content to every family in our viewing area, from great drama, world-class music, in-depth news, fascinating "how-to" programs and, best of all — non-violent educational programs for your children.

During these uncertain times, KLRN is adapting and creating educational resources in an easy-to-follow format. We aim to provide educational content and resources that support every family in our community.

With these daily blog posts, you will find two PBS Kids programs featured, and accompanying educational activities that will help extend learning into your home. In addition to that we have added a new 4 PM time slot that aims at providing some content for older school age students. You will find resources tied to each of these programs aired daily with lessons from our PBS LearningMedia site.

We hope that this will provide your family a way to enjoy the PBS shows you love and extend the learning into your home.

All the best,

Curious George

Wednesday, June 3 at 8 AM

Dulson's Toy Store is having a contest! The person who comes closest to guessing how many Super Mega Fun-Balls are in the rocket shaped dispenser wins the entire container of balls -- and the rocket, too!

Red Sky At Night, Monkey's Delight - George is tired of his fun always being ruined by the weather! Inspired by the Man with the Yellow Hat's painting of a beautiful sunset, George starts a weather journal by drawing pictures of the sky. But predicting the weather isn't as easy as it seems.

Infant/Toddler

  • Homemade Fossils
With some basic kitchen ingredients, your child can have fun learning about fossils in this hands-on educational activity.

Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum

Wednesday, June 3 at 10:30 AM and 3 PM

I am Helen Keller Yadina becomes increasingly frustrated as she tries to read a book to Dr. Zoom, but has to keep stopping since it has words in it she doesn't know. Learning to read is SO hard - she feels like she'll never be able to do it. Curriculum: "There are many different ways to learn"

I am Alexander Graham Bell Losing his voice is frustrating enough for Brad, but it doesn't help matters when Xavier and Yadina do all the talking for him instead of trying to listen. It's important to listen to everyone. Curriculum: "Listen to everyone."

Infant/Toddler

  • Put on a Puppet Show
Puppet shows allow children to experiment with storytelling and imagination. Explore the basic elements of storytelling while you craft Peg-themed puppets and a theater for your show.
  • Mini Camping Tents
Pretend you are on a great camping adventure with these miniature paper tents!

Preschool

  • Storybook Castles
Turn a cardboard box into a captivating storybook castle! This activity is goof for working collaboratively, independent play, storytelling, developing storybook language and creative and imaginative development.
  • Play a Storytelling Game
Several of the historical figures Xavier, Brad, and Yadina meet on their adventures were storytellers themselves. In this activity, your child will use her imagination and practice storytelling by rolling homemade dice to tell a unique story! Each roll will designate an image on each of the three dice, which will become your story elements. Take turns telling a complete story by combining the three-story pieces in any creative way you can.
  • Using Maps to Tell Stories
This next storytelling activity for kids was inspired by the old DIY pirate treasure hunt activity for kids. First tell your child to draw a map of a town, imaginary or real. They could include places such as a school, hospital, library, park and shops. Now with your map created, you can use it as a prompt for storytelling! If your map is of an imaginary town, you can imagine what it would be like to live there. Tell a story about the day-to-day activities in that town or of different scenarios. For example “one day a hurricane comes and destroys the town…” or “Aliens coming to the town…” Of course you can still pretend that you’re a pirate on a treasure hunt or a tourist trying to find your way around town!

H2O: The Molecule that Made Us

Wednesday, June 3 at 4 PM

How did water arrive on Earth? How did it come to underpin every aspect of existence from dragonflies to deserts in bloom to human life? Dive in!

Grades K-5

Water Phases

Every day, we encounter water in its three different forms: liquid water, solid ice, and water vapor, an invisible gas. Most other substances can exist in these three phases as well, but water is unique because it is the only substance that can exist in all three phases at Earth's ordinary temperature conditions. This collection of still images produced for Teachers' Domain depicts water in each of its three phases: liquid water, solid ice, and water vapor.

Grades K-5

Watt Watchers: Water Conservation at Home

Saving water at home is easier than you think. By making small, intentional changes, you can save water at home.

Grades 6-12

Water, Water, Everywhere?

Where can water be found in the universe? For many years scientists believed that water could only exist in the "Goldilocks Zone"--an area where water can exist in liquid form. But there may be another way water can exist beyond this zone--and maybe alien life as well.

Grades 6-12

Life's Little Essential: Liquid Water

Without liquid water, terrestrial life could not exist. All living organisms on Earth depend on water and its unique chemical and physical properties. In the search for life beyond Earth, scientists have focused their efforts on looking for signs of liquid water. This essay from NOVA Online explores why liquid water is considered an essential ingredient for life as we know it.
