KLRN Learn at Home

KLRN strives to provide valuable educational content to every family in our viewing area, from great drama, world-class music, in-depth news, fascinating "how-to" programs and, best of all — non-violent educational programs for your children.

During these uncertain times, KLRN is adapting and creating educational resources in an easy-to-follow format. We aim to provide educational content and resources that support every family in our community.

With these daily blog posts, you will find two PBS Kids programs featured, and accompanying educational activities that will help extend learning into your home. In addition to that we have added a new 4 PM time slot that aims at providing some content for older school age students. You will find resources tied to each of these programs aired daily with lessons from our PBS LearningMedia site.

We hope that this will provide your family a way to enjoy the PBS shows you love and extend the learning into your home.

All the best,
KLRN’s Education Team

Preschool

  • Birthday Party Hat Cards
Create a beautiful birthday card using household materials.
  • Mini Personalized Piñata
These mini pinata party favors are personalized for each guest with their initial, and are easier to make than they look. They also double as place-setting decorations and make a very special personalized favor to give to your guests. Of course, you may use the same techniques to make one much larger piñata. The fun can also start before the party if you get the birthday child involved in making these, or at least helping to cut the crepe paper!

Cyberchase

Tuesday, June 2 at 6 AM and 3:30 PM

Has Hacker finally concocted his most perfect plan to shut down Motherboard once and for all, making him the ruler of Cyberspace? It looks that way, as Hacker has positioned giant patches of trash in Cyberspace to converge on Control Central! Hacker is giddy with delight, because the citizens of Cyberspace unknowingly helped his plan. They didn't dispose of their trash properly and created the trash patches to begin with.

Back at Control Central, Digit is updating Motherboard's software for her birthday and accidentally causes her to shut down! He and the CyberSquad try to reboot her, to no avail. With Motherboard down, they must rely on their quick problem-solving skills and help from citizen scientists to get to the bottom of the trash trouble and protect Control Central. Can they save Motherboard?

  • Play "How Many?"
When you and your child are in a group of people — in the car, at the park or around the dinner table — stop and ask, "I wonder how many people are here?" Help count each person, one at a time.
  • Count as You Step
Is your little one slow at climbing stairs? Motivate him with some number counting! Count each step as you mount it and see how high you can get. Your child will be scrambling up to higher numbers (and steps) in no time!
  • Peg and Friends Character Sticks
Spruce up your Peg + Cat birthday party decorations with these easy to make Peg and friends character sticks.

Preschool

  • Play Pretend: Resolving Conflict
We all learn to control anger, stand up for ourselves and resolve conflict through practice. Imaginary play is a fun and safe way to help children prepare for difficult moments, such as what to do when conflict arises at daycare, at school or with siblings.
  • Make a Neighborhood Geoboard
Explore geometric shapes, scaling, perimeters, and polygons with this homemade geoboard.

Grade 1

Wild Kratts: Animal Adaptations: Teaching Tips

Lessons using informational texts, and digital games and video clips from Wild Kratts help children build concept knowledge about animal adaptations and how these adaptations help animals meet their needs and survive.

Children also learn about ways in which humans can improve their performance and solve problems by mimicking the ways animals use their physical characteristics to meet their needs. Throughout the lessons, children use the creative coding app PBS KIDS ScratchJr to report and share what they learned about animal adaptations. All lessons are aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
