KLRN strives to provide valuable educational content to every family in our viewing area, from great drama, world-class music, in-depth news, fascinating "how-to" programs and, best of all — non-violent educational programs for your children.

During these times of uncertainty KLRN is adapting and creating new educational resources in an easy to follow format. We aim to provide the educational content and resources that support every family in our community.

During these daily blog posts, you will find that we will feature two PBS Kids programs and provide accompanying educational activities that will help extend the learning into your home. In addition to that we have added a new 4 PM time slot that aims at providing some content for older school age students. You will find resources tied to each of these programs aired daily with lessons from our PBS LearningMedia site.

We hope that this will provide your family a way to enjoy the PBS shows you love and extend the learning into your home.

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

Fun activities

Books about Birthdays:

  • Happy Birthday to You! by Dr. Seuss
  • The Berenstain Bears and Too Much Birthday by Stan Berenstain
  • Spot's Birthday Party by Eric Hill
  • Infants: Tummy time prepares babies for the time when they will be able to slide on their bellies and crawl. As babies grow older and stronger they will need more time on their tummies to build their own strength. Take a large blanket outside and place under a tree, for shade, and have some tummy time with your baby.
  • Toddlers: Elmo Slide- children enjoy dancing at parties and it helps build their gross motor skills. This music video explores relational concepts through dance and movement.
  • Preschool Activity: Create Music Shakers for a Party. Get plastic Easter eggs and fill them with rice, paper clips or any other item to make noise. Seal with colored tape and your child has a shaker. You can also use 2 paper plates to create a shaker. Have the child decorate the paper plates and then place some rice, paper clips or other item in the center of one plate and then tape the two plates together with colored tape and your shaker is ready.
  • Activity for Everyone: Investigate ways to create different pitch, tones, and sounds by creating your own glass bottle water xylophone. This Discover Pitch With a Water Xylophone activity on PBS Parents is a fun activity for everyone.
  • PBS Kids Game: In this fun game with Trolley, your child can be in charge, deciding where and which direction Trolley should drive. Check out Drive Trolley here.

Wild Kratts

Fun activities

Infant Bubbles Activity: We all know that it’s great to get children outside and that nature play has a multitude of benefits for infants. The actual activity really isn’t as important as just giving your baby new experiences. Babies love bubbles. They are easy and inexpensive (if you are ambitious, you can make your own bubbles with soap and water) and you are sure to get some giggles!Here is a great Bubble Recipe.

Toddler Activity Paper Bag Animals: Grab a paper lunch bagalong with some craft supplies to create your own Paper Bag animal. Go here for some great ideas.

Preschool: Go on a Night Walk - Some creatures remain largely hidden during the day. After the sun goes down, take a walk around your backyard and search for signs of nocturnal animals and bugs. Depending on the time of year and your location, you might see or hear the following:

  • Crickets
  • Bats
  • Foxes
  • Racoons
  • Owls
  • Deer
  • Mice
  • Rats

Activity for everyone: The Kratt brothers love learning about and observing animals, big and small. Observe one of the world’s smallest birds by making a feeder for hummingbirds! Learn how to craft a colorful hummingbird feeder here.

Interactive Activities:

  • The Wild Kratts Baby Buddies App is for Wild Kratts fans of all ages from 3 to 8 and focuses on animal care and animal science.
  • The Wild Kratts are to the creature power rescue! Run, jump, fly, and swim through 24 action-packed levels, rescue animals to unlock information about each one in the Creaturepedia, and face-off against villains to keep the animals safe from harm.

American Experience: Greely Expedition

Tuesday, April 7 at 4 PM

In 1881, 25 men led by Lieutenant Adolphus Greely sailed from the harbor of St. John's, Newfoundland. Their destination was Lady Franklin Bay in the high Arctic, where they planned to collect a wealth of scientific data from a vast area of the world's surface that had been described by a British admiral as a "sheer blank." Three years later, only six survivors returned, with a daunting story of shipwreck, starvation, mutiny and cannibalism.

"The Greely Expedition," from producer Rob Rapley (Wyatt Earp), tells a harrowing tale of one of the great scientific adventures of all time. Drawing on a documentary record that includes scientific accounts, diaries, photographs and letters, the film reveals the nearly unbearable pressures experienced by the members of the expedition, and shows how poor planning, personality clashes, questionable decisions and pure bad luck conspired to turn a noble scientific mission into a human tragedy.

Satellites Orbiting Earth

In recent years, there has been a push to better understand how Earth works as a system — how land, oceans, air, and life all interact. Satellites in orbit around Earth are a fast and efficient way of gathering remotely sensed data about the planet as a whole. This animation adapted from NASA shows the orbital paths of the satellites in the Earth Observing System.
