KLRN strives to provide valuable educational content to every family in our viewing area, from great drama, world-class music, in-depth news, fascinating "how-to" programs and, best of all — non-violent educational programs for your children.

During these uncertain times, KLRN is adapting and creating educational resources in an easy-to-follow format. We aim to provide educational content and resources that support every family in our community.

With these daily blog posts, you will find two PBS Kids programs featured, and accompanying educational activities that will help extend learning into your home. In addition to that we have added a new 4 PM time slot that aims at providing some content for older school age students. You will find resources tied to each of these programs aired daily with lessons from our PBS LearningMedia site.

We hope that this will provide your family a way to enjoy the PBS shows you love and extend the learning into your home.

Nature Cat: Earth Day Today/Earth Day Every Day

It's Earth Day today! Hooray! To celebrate, Nature Cat, Squeeks, Daisy and Hal go on a nature hike over to Butterfly Hills. But they don't get too far because they keep running into plastic bags blowing in the wind. Earth Day Every Day - With an earth-friendly alternative in place for the supermarket plastic bag problem, Nature Cat and his pals look to get back to their Earth Day hike celebration but are once again sidetracked.

Infants and toddlers are often thought of as “too young” to be involved in gardening, but they can be engaged through watering, harvesting, digging, and exploring worms, insects and birds. The best way to help these ages benefit from a garden experience is through their senses.

Infant

  • Garden Corner
    Create a garden corner within your yard. Fill a large container with soil and add gardening tools, plastic vegetables, and an empty watering can. Children will love "gardening". Variation: You may also include a plastic container filled with water. Children can "wash" the vegetables they pick in their garden.
  • Garden Mobile
    Integrate mobiles, mirrors or sculpture into outdoor environments. This cute and easy activity by Happy Hooligans would be great to place outside for your infant/toddler to look at when outdoors.
  • DIY Watering Can
    This is an easy activity for you to do for your toddler. Not only is this the world's cheapest watering can, it is a brilliant way to teach children about recycling and caring for plants at the same time. This is also such a great way to water indoor plants, without making a mess everywhere.

Preschool

  • Grow Seedlings in an Egg Carton
    Growing seedlings in an egg carton is a great way to teach your child about plants.
  • Recycled Plastic Bottle Flowers
    April showers bring...flowers all year? Make your garden bloom all year long with these fun and vibrant recycled plastic bottle flowers.
  • The Dirt on Dirt | Sid the Science Kid
    In this episode of Sid the Science Kid, Sid and his friends lean that dirt is really important to the Earth because it helps things grow, and it's also filled with tiny rocks, pieces of leaves, and even living things like bugs and worms!
  • Earth Day
    We've only got one earth, don't you think we should celebrate it? Earth Day is an opportunity to cherish our planet and recognize how to protect it.

Cyberchase: Missing Bats in Sensible Bats

Tuesday, April 21 at 6:30 AM and 3:30 PM

Digit's cousin, Brigit, is in a prickly bind. Although her garden is overflowing with flowering cactus plants, they're not bearing any apple cactus fruit. And no cactus apple fruit means no cactus apple juice--everyone's favorite drink in all of Cyberspace!

Infant/Toddler

Making sense of scent helps by stimulating a baby’s sense of smell with familiar and enjoyable scents from around the home is an important part of happy, healthy baby development. Enjoyable familiar scents improve mood and alertness.

  • Scented Water
    Add scented extracts (e.g., peppermint, almond, vanilla, etc.) to water in a water table, in ice cubes for play, even to shaving cream for smearing. What about a colored scented bath to relax in at the end of the day?
  • Smell Like a Honeybee
    Help your child appreciate the special smelling talents of honeybees, while learning how “unbeelievably” important they are to the natural world!

Preschool

  • Bat Mobile Printable | Sesame Street
    Help your child create this fun and easy Bat mobile.
  • Build Homes for Bats
    Help your child build a bat box and learn about the habitat preferences and shelter needs of the little brown bat. After building bat house your child can use the criteria for good bat house placement to choose the best spot for their bat house.

Grades K-3

Pollinators | Cyberchase

Learn how animals spread pollen from one plant to another with this video from Cyberchase. This resource includes discussion questions, vocabulary, and a hands-on activity that models how pollinators spread pollen from flower to flower.

American Experience: Fight

Tuesday, April 28 at 4 PM

Explore the 1938 world heavyweight championship bout between Joe Louis and German Max Schmeling, who, in the shadow of war, became reluctant symbols of equality and supremacy, democracy and fascism.

Grades 3-7, 13+

Muhammad Ali | Boxer and Civil Rights Activist

Students will learn about the remarkable athletic achievements and advocacy of Muhammad Ali. After watching a biographical video, students will analyze a photograph taken during the height of the controversy over Ali’s refusal to fight in the Vietnam War, and they will read the transcript of a revealing interview Ali gave and answer questions about it. To conclude the lesson, students will choose a quotation to use for a motivational poster.
