KLRN strives to provide valuable educational content to every family in our viewing area, from great drama, world-class music, in-depth news, fascinating "how-to" programs and, best of all — non-violent educational programs for your children.

During these uncertain times, KLRN is adapting and creating educational resources in an easy-to-follow format. We aim to provide educational content and resources that support every family in our community.

With these daily blog posts, you will find two PBS Kids programs featured, and accompanying educational activities that will help extend learning into your home. In addition to that we have added a new 4 PM time slot that aims at providing some content for older school age students. You will find resources tied to each of these programs aired daily with lessons from our PBS LearningMedia site.

We hope that this will provide your family a way to enjoy the PBS shows you love and extend the learning into your home.

Sesame Street: Earth Day

Thursday, April 23 at 10 AM

It's Earth Day on Sesame Street! Rudy learns to be kind to the earth after he sees what it would be like if everyone acted like him and threw their trash on the street.

Infant/ Toddler

  • Fine Motor Activity
    Recycle and reuse baby food jars as a fine motor toy, let baby open and close the jars. Look around the house for other recyclable materials that you can use to make shakers for your infants and toddlers to use.
  • Earth and Sky
    Explore the Earth and Sky With Your Two-Year-Old

Preschool

  • Earth Painting
    Squirt a few drops of blue paint on the paper plate. This is a good opportunity to discuss with your children that most of our planet is covered in water, particularly in the form of oceans. The blue paint represents water, squirts of green paint as well. Discuss how the green represents the land masses on our planet, especially those of our seven continents. Once your child has finished adding paint, cover the paper plate with plastic. With the plastic wrap in place, invite children to use their fingers to spread the paint out so it covers the entire surface of the plate.
  • Salt Painting Our Solar System
    The sun is the center of the Earth’s solar system, giving light to the planets as they orbit around it. As Jet and his friends will tell you, getting to know the solar system is key to learning more about our universe. Help your child learn about our place in space with this art project.
  • Rescue Ecotopia
    Your child can help save Ecotopia from Hacker’s disasters by adding animals and plants to keep the ecosystem healthy.

Xavier Riddle and The Secret Museum

Thursday, April 23 at 10:30 AM and 3 PM

I am Julia Child: Julia invites our kids to make jam with her, but quickly realizes that a recipe will be needed if they want it to taste any good. Watching Julia have a lot more success following a step-by-step recipe encourages Xavier to do the same with his model plane -- and it works! Turns out, you can do anything if you take it one step at a time.

I am Neil Armstrong: Yadina follows along with Neil as he takes his first steps toward exciting new things: climbing a tree, flying a plane, and even walking on the moon! If Neil Armstrong can do all that, then Yadina decides she can also try new things, one step at a time.

Infant/Toddler

  • Observation
    Go outside and watch branches and notice that they sway and bend in the wind also see how fast the clouds are passing overhead.
  • Make Straw Paper Airplanes
    With just a few straws, some construction paper, scissors, and tape, you and your child can make a paper airplane that looks...absolutely ridiculous!... but flies so well that the whole family will be trying to come up with the ultimate flier.

Preschool

Make Paper Planes to Glide Like a Draco

The draco lizard is able to glide from tree to tree using special “wings” that evolved out of its ribs. In this activity your child can explore the science of gliding with a simple paper airplane experiment.

The Right Stuff: Moon Landing Game | Ready Jet Go!

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon Landing with this Ready Jet Go! board game! As one team working together, kids complete engineering and design challenges and learn interesting facts about the first Moon landing and other human accomplishments in space. History Detectives #707

Hindenburg Artifact- A Hoboken, New Jersey, man has a palm-sized, army-green metal box that looks like an instrument panel. Family lore says that a distant relative was among the many bystanders plucking souvenirs from the wreckage of the terrifying disaster.

John Adams Book - A woman in Littleton, New Hampshire, inherited her husband's aunt's belongings, which include a curious late-18th-century book titled Trials of Patriots. It contains what appears to be President John Adams' signature in three places, and includes an inscription, "Charles Adams from His Father, 1794."

Birthplace of Hip Hop - A hip-hop enthusiast from New York City has always heard that 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx is the birthplace of hip-hop.

Family History | History Detectives

Family stories are a rich window on the past. They can paint pictures of an important period in history through the experience, perspective, and memories of people who lived during that time. These lesson plans and videos, based on artifacts and family heirlooms featured in History Detectives episodes, offer students opportunities to dig deeper into their own family history.

Through activities that emphasize genealogical research and oral history interviews, students can begin to discover and access new information about themselves—as well as acquire the skills required to become history detectives in their own right.

Grades 9-13+

Sampling: The Foundation of Hip Hop | Lesson Plan | Soundbreaking

Students learn about the creative concepts and technological practices on which Hip Hop music was constructed, investigating what it means to “sample" from another style, and who has used sampling and how.
