KLRN strives to provide valuable educational content to every family in our viewing area, from great drama, world-class music, in-depth news, fascinating "how-to" programs and, best of all — non-violent educational programs for your children.
During these times of uncertainty KLRN is adapting and creating new educational resources in an easy to follow format. We aim to provide the educational content and resources that support every family in our community.
During these daily blog posts, you will find that we will feature two PBS Kids programs and provide accompanying educational activities that will help extend the learning into your home. In addition to that we have added a new 4 PM time slot that aims at providing some content for older school age students. You will find resources tied to each of these programs aired daily with lessons from our PBS LearningMedia site.
We hope that this will provide your family a way to enjoy the PBS shows you love and extend the learning into your home.

Curious George

Curious George's Home for Pigeons: Compass may be a homing pigeon but sometimes he has trouble finding his way home. George decides to make him a place to stay on their balcony. After much experimentation, George creates a tree that The Man with the Yellow Hat might not recognize but in Compass's eyes is the perfect pigeon perch.
Out of Order: When George sees a very nice lady leaving packages behind everywhere she goes, he figures she must be very forgetful. He decides to be helpful by gathering up all the packages for her. When Betsy explains to George that the nice lady is actually the mail carrier, they have to figure out a system to match the packages up with the correct address and return them fast!
Fun activities
Discussion: After viewing the show go over this handout, which talks about some different bird facts and more with your child.
Build: Look for items to use around your home to build a bird nest. You can gather a paper plate, string-yarn, scissors and natural materials (twigs, leaves, grass). There is no right or wrong way of making a bird nest. Children can experimentwith the materials to see how they can build a strong bird nest. Ask the following questions while building the nest. How strong can you make a bird's nest? Will your bird's nest stay together in a wind? (You can test it with a hairdryer.), How deep does your nest need to be to keep the bird eggs safe? Would your bird's nest be comfortable?, What happens if it rains?, Will water collect inside or drain away? (You can test it with a watering can).
Infants: Model hand clapping while singing a catchy tune. Show the infant how to clap hands by holding her hands. Model hand clapping again and let the infant watch you and imitate.
Toddlers: Animal Walk Inside or out, encourage your child to slither like a snake, hop like a frog, gallop like a horse, or walk like a bear on all fours. While doing these activities they are developing their gross motor skills.
Preschool Activity: Playing Hide and Seek gives children some valuable physical benefits. The exercise helps them build stamina and aids muscle development. The challenge of getting into the perfect hiding place will help improve their balance, agility, and coordination. Play Daniel Tiger's Hide and Seek game.

Soundcheck: Olive and Otto must figure out how and why things are disappearing around town when all Otto wants to do is listen to a song by his favorite band, Soundcheck. Curriculum: Number operations; subtraction.
Double Trouble: Debbie from Debbie's Pizzeria has doubled... not once, but twice, creating four Debbies! When one of the four Debbies goes missing, Olive and Otto need to find her. Curriculum: Numbers and counting; doubling.
Fun activities
Build Paper Polyhedrons: From their many gadgets to each department’s logos, The Odd Squad frequently finds and uses 2-dimensional (2D) and 3-dimensional (3D) shapes to help solve their investigations. In this activity, your child will fold and glue paper to build 3D shapes while learning math vocabulary. Download the activity here.

History Detectives

Sideshow Babies: A Colorado woman has a silver baby cup engraved "Patricia - 1933. A Century of Progress Chicago." She hopes this 1933 Chicago World's Fair souvenir can unlock the mystery of her mother's unusual start in life. Family lore holds that the Chicago Public Health Board took premature Patricia from her shoebox cradle at home and put her in an incubator at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair.
Lubin Photos: A contributor from Branford, Florida, inherited two bulging photo albums, dated 1914 to 1916, that contain hundreds of photos of old silent film stars and a behind-the-scenes look into an enormous film studio empire - not in Hollywood, but Philadelphia.
Navajo Rug: At auction, a contributor bought a rug whose woven designs intrigued him. A Southwest American history buff, he's fascinated by the rug's central figure of a man with a feathered head holding lightning bolts. HISTORY DETECTIVES guest host Eduardo Pagan meets with a Navajo medicine man and a traditional Navajo weaver and travels to Crownpoint, New Mexico, long considered the center of Navajo weaving. Finally, HISTORY DETECTIVES visits a textile historian to find out who may have been behind this controversial design.

Navajo Dance of the Deities: Dance Arts Toolkit
The Pollen Trail Dancers from the Navajo Reservation north of Joseph City, Arizona, perform a dance in this video from the Dance Arts Toolkit series. The dance is inspired by the Navajo teachings of the four directions as sacred pillars of Mother Earth.
For Grades 6-12
Navajo Reflections on Climate Change
Hear personal observations about how the environment—plant life, in particular—has changed in the Navajo Nation, in this video segment adapted from Navajo Technical College. One Elder describes how the environment used to be in balance, and there was an abundance of vegetation and corn, but now she believes the environment is decaying. A professor of environmental science describes how when he was a child, there seemed to be more of a monsoon season, the vegetation was more lush, and some native plants were easier to find.
