KLRN strives to provide valuable educational content to every family in our viewing area, from great drama, world-class music, in-depth news, fascinating "how-to" programs and, best of all — non-violent educational programs for your children.

During these uncertain times, KLRN is adapting and creating educational resources in an easy-to-follow format. We aim to provide educational content and resources that support every family in our community.

With these daily blog posts, you will find two PBS Kids programs featured, and accompanying educational activities that will help extend learning into your home. In addition to that we have added a new 4 PM time slot that aims at providing some content for older school age students. You will find resources tied to each of these programs aired daily with lessons from our PBS LearningMedia site.

We hope that this will provide your family a way to enjoy the PBS shows you love and extend the learning into your home.

Nature Cat

Thursday, May 28 at 7 AM

Nature Cat and friends learn about geysers when they go on an adventure to see how they work; Nature Cat and friends learn about animals that like rain.

Infant/Toddler

  • Make a Rainbow Mobile
    Making a rainbow is a fun science activity. Ask your child if she has ever seen a rainbow? Remind her that it takes both rain and sun to create a rainbow. When sunlight passes through raindrops at the right angle, the water acts like a prism and creates a rainbow.
  • See How Shadows Work
    Discover the secret of shadows and why their length changes throughout the day.
  • "I Spy" Rainbow Bottle
    Keep kids busy during long trips with this easy-to-make "I Spy" bottle craft.

Preschool

  • Play Storm Dodger!
    Play a game that helps your child understand that storms follow paths, and that a storm’s speed and direction can be tracked to help people make plans.
  • Rainbow Eruptions
    This rainbow eruptions activity is a great after-school project for kids! Add baking soda and food coloring to small containers then pour on some vinegar to watch each container erupt.

10 Picture Books that Inspire Outdoor Exploration

Digit's friend Ren is excited to plan a very special Valentine's Day party at his favorite spot--the beautiful Botlyn Botanic Garden. It's the only garden in all of bustling Botlyn, and he can't imagine having his celebration any place else. But when Ren and the CyberSquad discover the garden isn't available, it's time to improvise. They get their hands dirty and use their math skills to plot out and plant a beautiful garden in an unlikely space. Will everything come up roses? Meanwhile, Hacker receives an unexpected valentine of his own. From whom could it possibly be?

  • Grow Sprouts from Dried Beans
    With this activity, children can see day by day that living things grow — but it takes time and we have to wait! Usually things grow so slowly we can’t see them growing – like ourselves- but with this activity we can see how something grows each day. As Mister Rogers sang “You’re bigger than you were a day ago.”
  • Grow Your Colors
    Eating a rainbow of colors is fun and healthy—and pretty!
  • “I Love You Because” Garden
    Little expressions of love are like seeds in a garden. If you plant them, they can grow into feelings of confidence and joy.

Preschool

  • Spider Plant Garden House
    Combine gardening and recycled crafting with this recycled milk carton rooftop garden.
  • Grow Seedlings in an Egg Carton
    Growing seedlings in an egg carton is a great way to teach your child about plants.
  • Design Your Own Plant Super Hero
    Examine different types of plants and how they clean the air to make it better for us to breathe. Then, draw your own plant superhero that can help save your family from pollutants in the air!

History Detectives

What does the evocative symbol of a bird dropping a bomb mean? Did two patches with the symbol belong to a World War II unit? Then, Gwen Wright connects a tiny swatch of tattered red fabric to a pivotal moment in U.S. Civil War history. Did a neckpiece and leggings once belong to Chief Black Kettle, known as a Cheyenne Peace Chief? Finally, did President Lincoln actually sign this note?

Learn the Address

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, documentarian Ken Burns, along with numerous partners, has launched a national effort to encourage everyone in America to video record themselves reading or reciting the speech. The collection of recordings housed on this site will continue to grow as more and more people are inspired by the power of history and take the challenge to LEARN THE ADDRESS.
