KLRN strives to provide valuable educational content to every family in our viewing area, from great drama, world-class music, in-depth news, fascinating "how-to" programs and, best of all — non-violent educational programs for your children.

During these uncertain times, KLRN is adapting and creating educational resources in an easy-to-follow format. We aim to provide educational content and resources that support every family in our community.

With these daily blog posts, you will find two PBS Kids programs featured, and accompanying educational activities that will help extend learning into your home. In addition to that we have added a new 4 PM time slot that aims at providing some content for older school age students. You will find resources tied to each of these programs aired daily with lessons from our PBS LearningMedia site.

We hope that this will provide your family a way to enjoy the PBS shows you love and extend the learning into your home.

Sesame Street

Thursday, April 30 at 10 AM

Bert and Ernie are animal-sitting six animals, but the animals sneak outside onto Sesame Street. Bert and Ernie ask Alan and Elmo for their help to make sure they find all six animals.

Math is everywhere—it’s in the numbers, shapes and patterns all around us.

Infant/Toddler

  • Patty-cake
    This is a hand-clapping game where you and your baby alternate between a normal individual clap with 2-handed claps. This simple sequence of clapping teaches your baby about the mathematical concept called patterns. It is the first step to understand that the world works in logical and predictable ways.
  • Measure That Foot
    You can help kids develop their understanding of measurement by using non-traditional tools.
  • Math On-the-Go Cards
    These cards are great learning tools when you’re on the go or just passing time. You can bring the cards to life! Apply the learning on each card to wherever you are. For example, after completing a pattern with Abby Cadabby, look for patterns all around you.

Preschool

  • Math With Everyday Games
    When kids play everyday games like cards and dice, they’re already discovering the fun in math.
  • Practice Math Skills with Sidewalk Math
    Tossing water balloons at numbers on the sidewalk is not only fun, but it gives children a chance to put their math skills to the test.
  • Pattern Play
    Recognizing and extending patterns of everyday objects lays the foundation for future math learning.

Math in Unlikely Places

Everyday moments at home can be math learning moments.

Molly of Denali

Thursday, April 30 at 7:30 AM & 1:30 PM

It's been a long winter in Qyah, and everyone is out of birch syrup. Luckily, Auntie Midge is teaching Molly and Tooey how to tap trees so they can make more. But then a mischievous raven unties the rope tethering their boat to the shore, and the trio are left stranded with barrels of sap and no way to get them home.

Molly and her Dad are shocked when Travis, a tourist, announces that the goal of his expedition is to find a living woolly mammoth. He's read all about it in a "reputable" book and is convinced mammoths dwell in a secret valley. Can Molly convince Travis that mammoths are extinct before his shenanigans turn into a mammoth problem for them all?

Infant/Toddler

  • Elephant Puppet Sticks
    Color different colors and cut out elephant shapes and take the jumbo craft sticks and glue them to the cutouts. Then show the different colored elephants to your baby and talk about the color and sounds the elephants make.
  • Explore Nature on a Walk
    Children can find all kinds of treasures everywhere! Plan a walk with your child and maybe a friend, too. You may not get very far, or move very quickly, but children can have a chance to look for things like leaves, tiny bugs, stones, and squirrels.

Preschool

  • Elephant Counting
    Make a circus ring and several elephant cut outs. Put some of the elephant cut outs in the ring. Then ask your children "How many elephants are inside the circus ring?" Then remove some of the Elephants and ask your children "How many of the elephants stayed inside (or left) the ring?"
  • Elephant Stomp
    Tape elephants all over bubble wrap. And then tape the bubble wrap down to the floor. Tell the kids to stomp like an elephant.

Stalag 17 Portrait - A Tempe, Arizona, woman has an intriguing memento of a sobering World War II experience: a portrait of her father sketched while he was held inside the German prisoner of war camp, Stalag 17B.

Seadrome - A Rochester, New York, man inherited three photos of a Seadrome model from his grandfather.

Black Tom Shell - A woman in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, has an explosive artifact in her possession: a large, intact artillery shell, along with a note in her mother's handwriting that reads "Black Tom Explosion of 1914."

Grades 4-12

  • Detective Techniques: Preservation | History Detectives
    Use these History Detective techniques for preserving papers, books, photographs and textiles. When it comes to preserving and maintaining your family's treasures, the guidelines are very simple. It's putting them into action that takes a little work. You can't turn back the clock, but you can protect your treasures for the future.
