KLRN strives to provide valuable educational content to every family in our viewing area, from great drama, world-class music, in-depth news, fascinating "how-to" programs and, best of all — non-violent educational programs for your children.

During these uncertain times, KLRN is adapting and creating educational resources in an easy-to-follow format. We aim to provide educational content and resources that support every family in our community.

With these daily blog posts, you will find two PBS Kids programs featured, and accompanying educational activities that will help extend learning into your home. In addition to that we have added a new 4 PM time slot that aims at providing some content for older school age students. You will find resources tied to each of these programs aired daily with lessons from our PBS LearningMedia site.

We hope that this will provide your family a way to enjoy the PBS shows you love and extend the learning into your home.

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

Monday, May 4 at 9AM

Daniel Makes a Noise Maker - Daniel and Katerina are playing "super hero helpers." They use Baby Margaret's rattle as their super-duper noise maker to make sure everyone knows that help is on the way. When Baby Margaret wants her rattle back, Katerina and Daniel create their own super-duper noise makers and continue saving the day!

Daniel Makes the Neighborhood - Daniel and Prince Wednesday are at the Museum-Go-Round playing with Miss Elaina. The three friends decide to take their stuffed toys for a Trolley ride around a pretend neighborhood, and create miniature models of their homes from items they find in the "Make It Box." Strategy: When there's something you need, try to make it yourself.

Infant/Toddler

  • Learning Through the Senses
    As babies and toddlers begin to explore their home and surroundings through all of their senses, they can be kept safe, healthy, and engaged.
  • Dance to Patterns
    Helping Your Two-Year-Old Identify and Predict Patterns
  • Do the Freeze Dance!
    Help kids follow directions and learn to control their bodies.
  • Make a Drum
    Drumming allows children to explore rhythm and to practice an important pre-writing skill. The ability to distinguish a particular noise (in this case the bangs of a drum) is great preparation for phonics (which involves identifying specific sounds in words). Grab an empty coffee can or container and personalize your drum with stickers. Once the drum looks ready, grab a wooden spoon and you’re good to go.
  • Egg Music Makers
    Recycle leftover plastic eggs and turn them into fun maraca-style egg music makers.

Preschool

  • Practice Self-Control by Playing Freeze Dance
    Self-control is an important skill for children to develop so they can do things like not hit when they feel angry or learn to stop playing when they have to go to the bathroom. Here’s a jazzy way to help your child practice self-control by combining music with this "freeze" game.
  • Create a Cardboard Guitar
    Making music is even more fun with a homemade instrument.

Virtual Games

  • Music Maker Game
    Make music with Peg and Cat by changing the height of objects to make the notes sound different.
  • Music Shop
    In this game, your child can visit the music shop to listen to the sounds of different instruments.

Cyberchase

Monday, May 4 at 6:30 AM and 3:30 PM

The CyberSquad and their new friend Scanner embark on a quest to build a new Encryptor Chip for Motherboard and cure her virus. With Hacker in hot pursuit, the kids must run, ski, canoe and climb their way to the end of the mission. In the process, they learn that a little activity over time adds up. But will they also cure Motherboard? Big idea: To have fun and be healthy, get up and moving for sixty minutes each day. Math concepts: Data Representation/Tables.

Its so important to wash hands during and after certain daily routines.

  • Cyberchase: Classroom of the Future
    In this media-rich activity from Cyberchase, students learn that surveys are an efficient way to collect data and to help make decisions based on evidence. They formulate survey questions about the classroom of the future, collect survey data, and analyze the data. They then apply the data to make decisions about changes that might be implemented in their classroom today.
  • Lock Combinations | Cyberchase
    In the lesson, Multiplication as Combinations, students learn to systematically identify all possible combinations, first among 2 objects with 3 possibilities each and then among 3 objects with 2, 2 and 4 possibilities each.

Breakthrough: The Ideas That Changed The World

Monday, May 4 at 4 PM

The Airplane: Take to the sky with the dreamers whose work gave humans the ability to fly. From Leonardo da Vinci's "flying machines" to the modern commercial plane, without these inventions, we may have never left the ground.

Grades 4-6

Dragonfly TV: Model Airplanes

Meet two model stunt plane pilots: Alex and Ryan. There are many models available and they want to know which plane features allow for the best stunts. Their question is: How does wing shape affect the plane's performance?

Grades 6-12

Airplanes: Designing for Stealth

This interactive activity from NOVA details some of the considerations aeronautical engineers make when designing an aircraft to avoid both human and electronic detection. It illustrates performance tradeoffs that may be required in the engineering design process to achieve stealth. For example, the ability to evade enemy radar detection and missile defense systems is more valuable than speed.
