KLRN strives to provide valuable educational content to every family in our viewing area, from great drama, world-class music, in-depth news, fascinating "how-to" programs and, best of all — non-violent educational programs for your children.

During these uncertain times, KLRN is adapting and creating educational resources in an easy-to-follow format. We aim to provide educational content and resources that support every family in our community.

With these daily blog posts, you will find two PBS Kids programs featured, and accompanying educational activities that will help extend learning into your home. In addition to that we have added a new 4 PM time slot that aims at providing some content for older school age students. You will find resources tied to each of these programs aired daily with lessons from our PBS LearningMedia site.

We hope that this will provide your family a way to enjoy the PBS shows you love and extend the learning into your home.

Amazing Maze Race - George is an expert at navigating the maze on the placemat at the Y-Go-By Diner, but his skills are put to the ultimate test when the Man with the Yellow Hat takes him to the Annual Amazing Maze Race at Renkins Farm.

The Color of Monkey - After a bubble bath, George promises the Man with the Yellow Hat that he will stay clean until their picture is taken for the cover of Bird Watchers Magazine.

  • Rainbow Celery Experiment
    Learn about capillary action with this simple and colorful rainbow celery experiment. This experiment allows you and your child to talk about the circulatory system and "capillary" action. The small "vessels" in the celery stalks carry the water and color to the leaves, like the way blood travels through your body.
  • Colorful Flower Garden Art
    Make a colorful flower garden masterpiece with your child by stamping flowers with different objects found throughout your house.
  • Testing Hypotheses While Color Mixing
    Investigate the science of color while learning and using the word “hypothesis.”

Who knew Hacker was a nature lover? Seems it all started many Cyber-years ago, when Motherboard banished him to the Northern Frontier. With only the trees to call his friends, Hacker developed a soft spot for the woodlands. That's why he's especially incensed when a new villain begins to zap his beloved trees into thin air. The tree-sanity must be stopped! In an unlikely pairing, the CyberSquad steps in to help Hacker. But, will they be able save the forest before it's too late?

    Decorate for your backyard explorer extraordinaire birthday party with this DIY branch mobile.
  • Paint With Nature
    Get outside and have fun with nature, using natural objects (leaves, flowers, or anything else!) as brushes or stamps to paint creative art projects.

Preschool

  • Coiled Snake Craft
    These cute snakes are colorful and fun, and allow your child to express his creativity using his favorite colors.
  • Homemade Fossils
    With some basic kitchen ingredients, your child can have fun learning about fossils in this hands-on educational activity.

Breakthrough: The Ideas That Changed The World: The Car

Go for a ride through the 9,000-year history of the car, from its roots in dogsleds to Henry Ford's affordable and assembly line-built Model T, and meet the scientists working on the next generation of self-driving automobiles.

Grades 1-4

Wind Powered Car Activity

Use wind power! The town of Bottawa loves using wind as power! Can you create a car that uses the air to move? Use the engineering design steps listed in this activity to create your own wind-powered car!

Grades 3-8

Balloon Car

Make 4-wheeled, air-powered cars that jet across the floor. Experiment with the design process and thrust in this activity from Design Squad Nation.

Grades 6-12

Carbon Fiber Car of the Future

In this video segment adapted from NOVA, hear physicist and energy expert Amory Lovins explain how to make more efficient cars by making them lighter and more aerodynamic. Explore how the use of carbon fiber can reduce weight without reducing size or durability, and learn about some manufacturing challenges associated with using carbon fiber materials.
