KLRN strives to provide valuable educational content to every family in our viewing area, from great drama, world-class music, in-depth news, fascinating "how-to" programs and, best of all — non-violent educational programs for your children.

During these uncertain times, KLRN is adapting and creating educational resources in an easy-to-follow format. We aim to provide educational content and resources that support every family in our community.

With these daily blog posts, you will find two PBS Kids programs featured, and accompanying educational activities that will help extend learning into your home. In addition to that we have added a new 4 PM time slot that aims at providing some content for older school age students. You will find resources tied to each of these programs aired daily with lessons from our PBS LearningMedia site.

We hope that this will provide your family a way to enjoy the PBS shows you love and extend the learning into your home.

Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

Monday, April 27 at 9 AM

Daniel Uses his Words: Daniel is playing "farm" today, but when Mom Tiger is cleaning up, she accidentally ruins Daniel's game. Grrr! Mom teaches Daniel to express his feelings so she can understand why he is upset. Once Daniel uses his words, Mom helps him rebuild his farm.

All Aboard!: The kids are playing "train" at school, but things aren't going Katerina's way. Meow! Soon, Katerina learns that people will not be able to help her if they don't understand why she is upset. When she explains her feelings, the children know how to help so that they can all play happily together!

Infant/Toddler

  • Babies are just starting to learn about their emotions and how to express them. Making faces with you is a game for your baby. And as you gaze into each other’s eyes, you build your relationship too.
  • Feelings Faceplates
    Draw the various face pictures directly on the plates. Place them all face down, and either turn one over yourself, or allow your baby to choose a plate. Talk about what you see in the picture. You can also use a mirror and make feeling faces with your child and name the feeling.

Preschool

  • Bake “Get Out the Mad” Cookies
    How do you talk with your children about managing their feelings? This activity encourages children to find another way to deal with feelings like anger and frustration. Tip: The cookies taste better the more you pound on the dough!
  • Caring & Emotions | Kindness in the Classroom
    Explore how students recognize and work with their emotions, learning to care for themselves and others.

Wild Kratts: Build It Beaver

Monday, April 27 at 2:30 PM

The Wild Kratts team must lend a hand to help a beaver rebuild its damaged lodge and restore the ecosystem for all the creatures who live there. Science Concepts: Beavers make dams that block the flow of water down a stream. Through building dams, the beaver single-handedly transforms the landscape, creating homes for a variety of wildlife.

Infant/Toddler

  • The Farm
    Fill a clear plastic bag with wood shavings and add animal figurines (hen, horse, sheep, pig, chicks, rabbit, farmer, etc.). Seal the bag with strong clear tape. Children will love to play with this miniature "farm".
  • Animal moves -As you move about in your home, encourage children to act out actions associated with different types of animals.

Preschool

  • Adding Up Animal Habitats
    In this activity, your child will practice basic math skills while exploring local habitats and the animals that live in them.
  • Paper Bag Animals
    Get ready for your child's next puppet show by creating these cute paper bag animals. You can make an eagle, an elephant, a lion, or a raccoon.

Grades K-3

  • Building a Dam Like a Beaver
    Water is notoriously hard to control. Driven by gravity or pressure it can squirt through the smallest opening, and in large volumes it carries incredible destructive potential. As a result, dams built to stop or divert the flow of water must be both impermeable to water and able to resist great force. In this video segment from PEEP and the Big Wide World, children experiment with various materials and designs to see if they can create a dam that meets the challenges of their specific circumstances.
  • Greatest Creature Builder - Wild Kratts | PBS KIDS Lab
    Use this video to teach children how beavers build dams that transform the landscapes around them. Chris and Martin meet one of nature's master builders, the Beaver.
  • Habitat Sweet Habitat
    Three siblings talk about where a group of imaginary animals would find food, water, and shelter in their backyard, in this video from PLUM LANDING. They make drawings of the imaginary animals, scout out ideal habitats for them in the backyard, and create posters highlighting the habitat and how it meets each animal’s needs.

Breakthrough: The Ideas That Changed the World

Meet the brilliant minds throughout history, from Galileo to Edwin Hubble, responsible for creating the telescope. Today, their invention allows humanity to reach the furthest limits of seeing 13 billion light-years out.

Grades PreK-3

Observatory and Telescope | Ready Jet Go!

Ready for a little redecorating? In this clip from Ready Jet Go!, Jet and his friends give their treehouse a makeover and turn it into an observatory. Sydney and Sean also teach Jet what a telescope is, and how it's used by scientists to observe space.

Grades 6-12

Hubble Telescope: Looking Deep

Since its launch is 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope has provided scientists with a vast amount of quality data and has contributed to a number of important discoveries. One of the best-known images — the Hubble Deep Field — shows some of the earliest and faintest galaxies ever seen. In this video segment adapted from the Space Telescope Science Institute, learn how the Hubble Space Telescope created this amazing picture of the early universe.
