KLRN strives to provide valuable educational content to every family in our viewing area, from great drama, world-class music, in-depth news, fascinating "how-to" programs and, best of all — non-violent educational programs for your children.

During these uncertain times, KLRN is adapting and creating educational resources in an easy-to-follow format. We aim to provide educational content and resources that support every family in our community.

With these daily blog posts, you will find two PBS Kids programs featured, and accompanying educational activities that will help extend learning into your home. In addition to that we have added a new 4 PM time slot that aims at providing some content for older school age students. You will find resources tied to each of these programs aired daily with lessons from our PBS LearningMedia site.

We hope that this will provide your family a way to enjoy the PBS shows you love and extend the learning into your home.

Clifford The Big Red Dog

CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG emphasizes good citizenship and the importance of community. Each episode concludes with a component of Clifford's Big Ideas - 10 different attributes children learn to embrace - which leaves them with something to think about and practice in their lives.

Infant/Toddler

  • Read Books
    Books are incredible ways to spark open doors to new ideas, solutions and adventures.
  • Tell Stories
    Ask your child to make up a story and draw pictures to share it with you.

Preschool

  • Play a Storytelling Game
    Several of the historical figures Xavier, Brad, and Yadina meet on their adventures were storytellers themselves. In this activity, your child will use her imagination and practice storytelling by rolling homemade dice to tell a unique story! Each roll will designate an image on each of the three dice, which will become your story elements. Take turns telling a complete story by combining the three story pieces in any creative way you can.
  • Write a Story with Your Child Based on a Real Experience
    Write a story with your child and help him read it back to you.
  • Family Drawing Game
    Doodling is making a comeback. It’s easy to see why — it’s fun and there are no rules. Plus, it doesn’t have to be good or fancy to have pretty significant impacts on learning. For instance, did you know that doodlers are up to 29 percent more successful at recalling info than non-doodlers? Doodling can also help children focus and even help trigger a-ha moments! Here’s a family game that gets everyone doodling and is a great activity while waiting for an appointment, getting your oil changed, or any time the family needs a silly break.

Great Adventures Start with a Story

Wild Kratts

The Wild Kratts team is on an important mission to unearth why Rhinos are mysteriously disappearing from the African Savannah. They soon discover that Zach Varmitech has been kidnapping them to create a new super Rhino Dozers so the creature adventurers devise a plan to rescue them - and it just might work! Along the way, they explore the nature of symbiotic relationships and learn that animals have different structures and behaviors that help them defend themselves. Rhinos use their size, sharp horn, mud bathing and their relationship with a small bird for defense.

Infant/Toddler

  • Paper Plate Snakes
    Paper plates can be used in many crafts. In this activity, you and your child can create colorful snakes using paper plates and googly eyes.
  • Craft a Nature Dragonfly
    Going on a nature walk is a great way to learn about the world. In this activity, you and your child will create beautiful dragonflies using a mix of objects you find on your nature walk.
  • Create Egg Carton Turtles
    Instead of throwing away empty egg cartons, upcycle them into this easy and adorable turtle craft while discussing sea turtles’ habitats and the importance of recycling.

Storybook: Media Arts Toolkit

Storybook is an illuminated diorama that invites us to remember that opening a book is like stepping through a magical portal into another world. Created for the BLINK art and light festival in Cincinnati, the piece combines glowing light and layers of simple, white silhouetted shapes.
