Federal Funding for Public Broadcasting Update

August 7, 2006

The US Senate Appropriations Committee recently approved funding recommendations for several of public broadcasting's major programming, educational and outreach services. While domestic and international issues continue to exert pressure on governmental spending, these recommendations give public broadcasting a stronger position in the upcoming 2007 budget negotiations.

However, a major challenge is still ahead.  The House Appropriations Committee has taken a much more draconian approach, voting to zero out several important programs for public broadcasting, including key infrastructure and education programs.  To address this and other discrepancies between the Senate and House bills, representatives from both chambers could begin deliberations in early September when Congress returns from its recess.  We ask that you remain vigilant in your support and urge your Representative to approve full funding for public broadcasting.
