KLRN, as part of its Vme Public Affairs Initiative, offered a public affairs journalism workshop on March 25, 2011 to the students at Travis Early College High School and instructed them on how to conduct an objective interview. The workshop was taught by Melissa Rentería, a reporter from Conexión. She introduced students to new skills needed to cover a public affairs topic. Students learned that public affairs reporting could include almost anything that deals with the appropriation, distribution, handling or expenditure of public funds. 

During the workshop students brainstormed public affairs topics that affect the Latino community in San Antonio. Students then used the information learned/discussed to choose a topic to conduct their own interviews in groups of four. They were given three weeks to complete the assignment. They interviewed their peers, family members, and community and school staff. Yvonne Yates, Director of School Services and Jennifer Herrera, Education Associate provided follow-up support as the students engaged in recorded interviews using flip cameras provided by the station.

The project ran from February-May 2011. The Vme Public Affairs Initiative was made possible through funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Vme, one of America's largest Spanish networks, informs and entertains Latino families in Spanish with drama, music, sports, news, public affairs and Latin cinema, food, lifestyle, nature and the most-widely distributed block of educational preschool content on Spanish TV. KLRN airs Vme on Channel 9.3.
