UT professor discusses what lures migrants to brave the path to the U.S.

Much has been written and said in the wake of this week’s terrible tragedy, the deaths of immigrants locked in an unair-conditioned and unvented truck parked in a Wal-Mart parking lot on San Antonio’s Southwest Side.

We will look at the magnet that lures desperate migrants to brave the increasingly difficult and dangerous path to the United States. Joining Rick Casey on the program is University of Texas professor Néstor Rodríguez, who has studied the phenomenon for decades.

Evan Smith, chief executive officer of the Texas Tribune, joins Casey from Austin to discuss the latest developments in the Legislature’s special session.

Casey closes out the program with his Last Word, where he chats about a remarkable article by one of America’s top journalists focusing on the Department of Energy and its leader, our very own Rick Perry — and why we should be scared, very scared.

Tune in to Texas Week at 8 p.m. Fridays.
