Local officials stepping up mosquito abatement program

A new report of 126 cases of West Nile disease in East Texas has local officials stepping up its mosquito abatement program, which includes spraying ditches, drains and public rights of way.

West Nile and the Zika virus are both transmitted by mosquitos. Last year, there were 275 cases of West Nile in Texas, including 16 deaths.

So far this year, Texas has had 191 reported cases of the Zika virus disease, including 11 in Bexar County.
