City council considers ban on pavement sealant

Email share

The San Antonio City Council is considering a ban of a pavement sealant that is banned or restricted in at least six other states due to a potential cancer risk.

Coal Tar Sealants are used on roadways and parking lots but the U.S. Geological Survey reports they are a source of a carcinogenic known as PAH.

The sealant is picked up on tire dust and has the potential to contaminate water supplies.
