More people are leaving prisons across the country to return to their families and communities than at any other time in our history. Many will have difficulty managing the most basic ingredients for successful reintegrationreconnecting with jobs, housing, and their families, and accessing needed substance abuse and health care treatment.
Where will they go and what will they do?
Some of the most important and innovative work in the reentry field is occurring at the community level. At the Reentry Community Summit, we heard from several local organizations that are making a difference in our community as well as the reentry experiences of ex-offenders. Clips from the PBS documentary, Omar & Pete, a film about the obstacles ex-offenders faces as they reenter society was shown, and William ‘Pete’ Duncan, who was featured in the documentary, appeared as a special guest.
The event featured a resource fair of local organizations that provide services to ex-offenders and their families in our community.
The Reentry National Media Outreach Campaign is funded by a generous grant from The Annie E. Casey Foundation.
About Omar & Pete
In and
out of prison for more than 30 years, Omar and Pete are determined to change their lives. This intimate and penetrating film follows the two long-time friends after what they hope will be their final prison release. Their lives take divergent paths as one wrestles with addiction and fear while the other finds success and freedom through helping others. Their story boldly exposes critical issues concerning reentry, and the complex challenges men face when reentering society.
Written, produced, and directed by Academy Award® nominated and national Emmy award-winning filmmaker Tod Lending, OMAR & PETE shows how challenging life on the outside can be for men who have lived much of their lives behind bars.
