If you live in the San Antonio area
and have a DTV receiver, you should
receive four DTV program streams
from KLRN-DT.
Digital Television - DTV - is one
of the most significant changes in
broadcasting since television began
before World War II.
DTV allows broadcasters to provide
a whole new range of services to address
local needs from continuing professional
development to enhanced entertainment,
all through a very high bandwidth
transmission (19.3 mbps) available
throughout the station's viewing area.
DTV is important to Public TV because
of the expanded services that this
technology will allow us to provide.
DTV includes an extensive set of media
services. Through DTV, KLRN will be
able to offer:
High Definition TV (HDTV) with greatly
improved picture quality, a wide screen
format and surround sound
Multicasting of four or more standard
definition programs at the same time
Enhanced TV with digital data content
for educational purposes
Delivery of data throughout the broadcast
coverage area (datacasting)

Multicasting and datacasting will
allow KLRN to reach more students
at more convenient times, deliver
computer software in addition to television
programs, and to offer a much wider
variety of programming and services
than we can currently provide on Channel
9.
KLRN is planning a variety of new
services to take advantage of this
new capacity. These services may include
special local programming concentrating
on the Arts, on workforce development,
and on local activities. KLRN plans
to greatly expand the amount of local
content in the broadcast service by
partnering with local organizations
and institutions. The results will
range from digital television programs
to multimedia presentations to streaming
data - and combinations of all these
things.
DTV is not simply
television, and it
can be accessed both
by DTV receivers
and by computers
equipped with DTV
tuner cards. Both
approaches have advantages.
Typically, DTV receivers
will have large,
high definition screens
and sophisticated
sound systems. Home
theatre will take
on a whole new meaning
with DTV.
Computers equipped
with DTV tuner cards
bring another dimension.
In addition to leveraging
existing equipment
- hard drive storage,
computer monitor,
keyboard and mouse
- the tuner itself
is inexpensive, bringing
DTV to computer users
at very little additional
cost. KLRN will be
able to provide an
educational portal
- a selection of
pre-approved web
sites specifically
chosen to supplement
classroom studies
and avoid sites that
are not relevant
to education.
KLRN is working with many providers
of educational content and services
today to present new and valuable
programming and services. The station
will address the multimedia needs
of pre-school children, K-12 classroom
students, workforce development and
continuing adult education - and more
- using the expanded capacity of the
DTV program stream. Today more and
more professions require annual certification
and continuing education credits,
and DTV will help deliver services
to those users.
The power of DTV is in its many layers
of service. Because DTV is a multitasking
environment, unlike the one-program-at-a-time
analog television service of today,
DTV can offer "both and" services:
both children's programming and college
credit telecourses; both HDTV and
datacasting; both local and national
programming - all at the same time.
DTV is the biggest expansion of broadcast
technology ever, offering a full spectrum
of services never before possible.
At KLRN, we are energized with the
challenge of applying this technology
for the benefit of the community.
We are working to find both content-providing
partners and users of the services
that could be available. Opportunities
abound - as never before. Our doors,
our ears and our email in-boxes are
open - so let us hear from you if
you have suggestions, questions or
would like more information.
Please let us hear from you about
the quality of our signal and programming
content.
