Program Description
America's medical system is often thought of as the best in the world;so why are some patients unable to get the prescription drugs that they need? The FDA estimates that hundreds of thousands of Americans are affected by a drug shortage of even the most generic drugs. The situation has left many hospitals scrambling to find medicines to treat its patients. In its wake, the drug shortage is now responsible for developing a "gray market" of overpriced medications. So why exactly is there a lack of prescription medicine and what is being done to prevent this? Host: Lark McCarthy. Guests Include: Representative John Carney, Delaware (D). Dr. Scott Gottlieb, Resident Fellow American Enterprise Institute, New York University Medical Center and former Deputy Commissioner at the FDA. Dr. Sandra Kweder, Rear Admiral US Public Health Service, Deputy Director at the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
