Program Description
One hundred years ago, the Wright brothers successfully introduced the first power-driven aircraft, and simultaneously ushered in an era of modern aviation that would drastically change the face of the world forever. Less than a decade after that famous first flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the clear skies over South Texas bid a warm welcome to the newly created wings of man. Since the early days of aviation in the Lone Star State, the colorful city of San Antonio has been at the very forefront of the ever-changing frontiers of flight. Although the nearly countless generations of aircraft and those who fly them have long been a central theme coursing through the diverse social, economic, and cultural fabric of San Antonio life, the dramatic and exciting story of WINGS OVER THE ALAMO has for the most part remained untold. Through a fast paced montage of vintage and contemporary photographs, film clips, and priceless on-location interviews with many of those who have taken an active part in the region's military and commercial aviation experience, the powerful and enduring influence of airpower over the past century will at last be told. The program presents the San Antonio aviation story in a compelling and focused manner, beginning with the arrival in the city of the United States Army's only aircraft-and its only aviator-in 1909.
