In Communities
PBS Ready To Learn stations conduct nearly 9,000 workshops a year.
To extend the educational impact of PBS KIDS programs “beyond the screen,” PBS Ready To Learn stations such as KLRN conduct workshops annually for parents of children ages birth to eight years old.
At these workshops, adults learn to get the most out of watching quality television with children.
Built around the Learning Triangle of “View,” “Do” and “Read,” the workshops explain the curriculum within PBS KIDS programs and show adults how to extend these lessons at home through children’s books and hands-on activities.
PBS Ready To Learn services reflect the special needs and circumstances of each community, and are designed to include adults with limited English or limited education. Stations partner with local organizations such as schools, child-care providers, Head Start programs and libraries to better serve community needs.

Our Impact
More than seven million children have benefited from Ready To Learn training of more than 900,000 adults.
A University of Alabama study found that families’ television viewing habits improved after parents attended Ready To Learn workshops. Children watched less television overall, and the programs they watched were more educational.
Another finding from the study shows, as parents became better TV gatekeepers, their families spent more time together reading and doing education-related activities. Parents who participated in workshops read more books to their children, engaged in more hands-on and word-related activities, read more for education, and took their children to libraries and bookstores more often than parents who did not attend workshops.
All these activities enhance young children’s readiness for school.
