Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15 to October 15. The term 'Hispanic' refers to Spanish-speaking people of any race that live in the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

KLRN is proud to present the 2006 Institute for Connecting Teachers and Technology Conference on Saturday, September 23, 2006 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the University of Texas at San Antonio's downtown campus. This year's theme, "Rockin' with Technology," will explore the importance of integrating cutting-edge technology and instructional video into the classroom curriculum. Looking for ESL Content?
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 with PBS’s Maya & Miguel, a show that encourages the better understanding of a variety of cultures. The show’s website features a teacher section loaded with lesson plans and activities designed to promote cultural appreciation in the classroom for children in grades 1 to 4. The Scholastic website also features easy-to-use lesson plans designed to explore the hispanic heritage in pre-k to 8th grade classrooms.

Celebrate Tejano Heritage Month
Tejano: a descendant of the Spanish and Mexican families that first inhabited the Texas frontier from the late 1600s through the late 1800s. The first families of Texas, Tejanos lived in the area nearly 150 years prior to the Texas Revolution and created the areas first towns, governments, missions, ranches and roads.

KLRN Women's Health Conference
Designed to empower women with knowledge to help them make choices about their health, the KLRN WOMEN’S HEALTH CONFERENCE on Saturday, September 30 at the Henry B. Bring PBS shows into the classroom by downloading select programs onto a personal media player or computer.  The media providers Open Media Network and Google Video and Macintosh’s iTunes are now offering video downloads and podcasts of the programs: Cyberchase, Scientific American Frontiers, NOVA, and more for free or a small fee.

PBS is also offering free Podcasts, or audio broadcasts, of several shows including American Experience, Dragonfly TV, NOVA, and more.

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on September 15 to honor the independence of five Latin American countries -- Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatamala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

KLRN-TV Hosts Pre-K Now Videoconference
Join San Antonio community leaders on Wednesday, September 20 at 11:30 a.m. at KLRN for a two-hour broadcast featuring Libby Doggett, executive director of Pre-K Now, George Stephanopoulos, ABC News correspondent, and other national leaders about best practices in the Pre-K movement. Afterword, the Texas Early Childhood Education Coalition (TECEC) will provide an overview of how you can get involved at the local level.

WIDE ANGLE: BACK TO SCHOOL

 This is the second installment of Time for School, the multi-year project launched in 2003 when Wide Angle profiled seven children in seven countries - Afghanistan, Benin, Brazil, India, Japan, Kenya, and Romania - starting their first year of school, often despite great odds. With over 100 million children around the globe out of school, this 90-minute special puts a human face on an issue with profound consequences for global development.


ROAD TO INDEPENDENCE

Thanks to the innovative LifeLink program, a group of high-school students with physical, social or learning disabilities are easing into collegiate life. The program traces the students' difficulties and triumphs as they work toward their ultimate goal - independence.

NOVA presents a minute-by-minute eyewitness account of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, exploring why the flood defenses and disaster relief planning failed to match Katrina's fury.

P.O.V. : THE BOYS OF BARAKA

African-American boys have a very high chance of being incarcerated or killed before they reach adulthood. In Baltimore, one of the country's most poverty-stricken cities for inner-city residents, the Baraka School project was founded to break the cycle of violence through an innovative education program that literally removed young boys from low-performing public schools and unstable home environments. Winner of awards at the Newport, Chicago and SILVERDOCS Film Festivals.


LATINO HERITAGE PACKAGE: PASAJERO, A JOURNEY OF TIME AND MEMORY

Pasajero, A Journey of Time and Memory is a heartwarming musical and cultural journey through the experiences of a group of young Mexican-American musicians, singers and dancers who accompany their mariachi maestro on his homecoming to Mexico.


VOCES: THE BRONZE SCREEN: 100 YEARS OF THE LATINO IMAGE I

Part 2 airs September 22 at 10 pm.

The Bronze Screen reveals the engaging, entertaining and largely untold history of Latino contributions to the Hollywood motion picture industry. The two-part documentary charts the struggles of many gifted artists to bring a measure of authenticity to their roles in order to transcend crudely cliched movie stereotypes.


NOVA: EINSTEIN'S BIG IDEA

P.O.V. : TWELVE DISCIPLES OF NELSON MANDELA

As part of the first wave of black South African exiles, Harris' stepfather, B. Pule Leinaeng, and his 11 comrades left their home in Bloemfontein in 1960. They told the world about the brutality of the apartheid system and raised support for the fledgling African National Congress and its leader, Nelson Mandela.

Her name has become synonymous with the French monarchy and all its excesses, but there is more to the story of Marie Antoinette than the simplistic tale of how a frivolous sovereign helped provoke the uprising that became the French Revolution.
