This year’s Institute for Connecting Teachers and Technology Conference on September 23 at the University of Texas at San Antonio Downtown campus was rockin’. The theme, Rockin’ with Technology, brought more than 100 educators together to honor the past while entering the future of teaching with technology. Clifford's Mission: Paw-ssible Week
October is Adopt-A-Dog Month and KLRN and CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG are celebrating with "Clifford’s Mission: Paw-ssible" Week on October 9-13. It's a week of themed episodes highlighting pet care and responsible pet ownership, plus the debut of a new CLIFFORD’S PUPPY DAYS episode on Wed., Oct. 11.  To kick off the week, Mayor Hardberger, who has appeared in one of KLRN’s series of responsible pet ownership public service announcements, plans to call a very special press conference on Friday, October 6 at 1:30 in the media briefing room at City Hall to welcome Clifford to San Antonio with a pet license.

Clifford will make public appearances on Saturday, October 14 at (2-2:30, 3-3:30, 4-4:30, 5-5:30) in South Park Mall to start off Humane Society’s monthly pet adoptions. Bring your cameras to get a picture with Clifford.

Pre-K Now National Videoconference Broadcast Available Online
Advocates of the Pre-K movement who missed the Pre-K Now broadcast hosted by KLRN-TV last month can now watch online at the Pre-K Now website.  Watch Libby Doggett, executive director of Pre-K Now, George Stephanopoulos, ABC News correspondent, and other national leaders speak about best practices in the Pre-K movement. Texas was one of just a few states that were highlighted for its Pre-K efforts.
Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 with PBS’s Maya & Miguel, a show that encourages the better understanding of a variety of cultures. The show’s website features a teacher section loaded with lesson plans and activities designed to promote cultural appreciation in the classroom for children in grades 1 to 4. The Scholastic website also features easy-to-use lesson plans designed to explore the hispanic heritage in pre-k to 8th grade classrooms.

Revolutionary War Electronic Field Trip Broadcasts on KLRN in October
Learn more about the biggest turning point in the Revolutionary War when KLRN broadcasts Yorktown, a part of the Colonial Williamsburg Electronic Field Trip Series. Go back to October 1781 in the tiny village of York, where American independence was finally secured. Tune in on Thursday, October 19 from 9 to 10 a.m. to view the special, which includes a reenactment interrupted by a live question and answer session between experts and students from around the U.S. The broadcast is free to watch, but schools interested in participating in the interactive session must subscribe for a fee by calling 1-800-761-8331. AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: EYES ON THE PRIZE: AIN'T SCARED OF YOUR JAILS – 1960-1961 & NO EASY WALK - 1961-1963
Monday, October 9 at 9 p.m.

Program 2 of 3 - Ain't Scared of Your Jails - 1960-1961 examines the impact of four black student protests during the 1960-1961 period -- the lunch counter sit-ins of 1960; the formation of SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee); the impact of the sit-ins on the Kennedy-Nixon presidential campaign; and the freedom rides of 1961.

No Easy Walk -1961-1963 examines three major civil rights movement events -- Albany, Georgia, where in a test of nonviolent tactics, police chief Laurie Pritchett overshadows Martin Luther King Jr.; Birmingham, Alabama, where children march against Bull Connor's fire hoses; and the march on Washington, D.C., which reveals broad support for the civil rights movement.


NOVA: MONSTER OF THE MILKY WAY

Astronomers are closing in on the proof they've sought for years that one of the most destructive objects in the universe might be in the center of our own galaxy. Through stunning computer-generated imagery, the program reveals the dark secrets of supermassive black holes.


P.O.V.: MAQUILAPOLIS (CITY OF FACTORIES)
Tuesday, October 10 at 10 p.m.

Just over the border in Mexico is an area peppered with maquiladoras  - massive sweatshops often owned by the world's largest multinational corporations. The documentary follows Carmen and Lourdes, where each day they confront labor violations, environmental devastation and urban chaos in Tijuana. As they struggle for survival, they organize a group for change, taking on both the Mexican and U.S. governments and a major television manufacturer.


VOICES FROM TEXAS
Sunday, October 15 at 2:30 a.m.

Mexican-Americans in Texas have consistently used poetry and spoken word to navigate their struggles, interpret history and celebrate life. VOICES FROM TEXAS probes the cultural and historical factors that have shaped this unique and vibrant voice within the American mosaic. Sandra Cisneros, Raul Salinas and Tammy Gomez are featured writers.


AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: EYES ON THE PRIZE: MISSISSIPPI: IS THIS AMERICA? & BRIDGE TO FREEDOM – 1965
Monday, October 16 at 9 p.m.

Program 3 of 3 - Mississippi: Is this America? - Mississippi's grass-roots civil rights movement becomes an American concern when college students travel south to help register black voters and three of them are murdered. The Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party challenges the regular Mississippi delegation at the Democratic Convention in Atlantic City.

Bridge to Freedom - 1965 A decade of lessons is applied in the climactic and bloody march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. A major victory is won when the federal Voting Rights Bill passes, but civil rights leaders know they have new challenges ahead.


NOVA: THE DEADLIEST PLANE CRASH
Tuesday, October 17 at 8 p.m.

"The Deadliest Plane Crash " pieces together the clues that led to a fatal take-off decision by the highly experienced captain of the KLM 747, who couldn't see the Pan Am 747 still parked on the runway, lost in the fog ahead of him.


BUFFETT & GATES GO BACK TO SCHOOL
Tuesday, October 17 at 10 p.m.

Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett and Microsoft Corporation founder Bill Gates travel to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for a lively discussion on business and ethics. The one-hour program features Buffett and Gates sharing their points of view on investments and their success, while also offering insightful glimpses into their personal and professional lives. The two good friends also provide advice on how to get a job, how to find success and how to help change the world, which sets the stage for Buffett's unprecedented contribution to Gates' foundation this summer.

SECRETS OF THE DEAD: DEATH AT JAMESTOWN
Wednesday, October 18 at 8 p.m.

The first British colony in the New World was Jamestown. The people who braved the unknown to found the colony were looking for wealth and adventure, but within six months, 80 of the original 100 were dead. Common theory blames the deaths on malaria or other fatal diseases. This episode unearths new evidence of disease, starvation, warfare, and even poison.  Was the death at Jamestown the result of bad planning, bad luck, or a sinister plot to sabotage the colony?


MOYERS ON AMERICA: THE NET AT RISK
Wednesday, October 18 at 9 p.m.

The future of the Internet is up for grabs. Big corporations are lobbying Washington to turn the gateway to the Web into a toll road. Yet the public knows little about what's happening behind closed doors.

Gaining Ground captures the stories of San Antonio West side residents who have seen their financial dreams realized. Learn about the programs and resources they utilized to reach their goals.


AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: TEST TUBE BABIES
Monday, October 23 at 9 p.m.

She was described in the press as the "Baby of the Century." When Louise Brown, the world's first successful test tube baby, was born in Great Britain on July 25, 1978, the event was heralded as the beginning of a technological revolution in human reproduction. This is the story of two doctors  whose work became the locus of debate over the limits of science and a precursor of the current debate over cloning and stem cell research.

Actors, writers and directors consider who exactly Amanda Wingfield, the mother in Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie, is.


NOVA: MAGNETIC STORM
Tuesday, October 24 at 8 p.m.            

The most serious power grid failure in American history was caused by a magnetic storm in the earth's upper atmosphere, itself triggered by the eruption of a huge flare from the surface of the Sun. Unusual as this event may seem, many scientists today are beginning to worry that it may be a harbinger of things to come.


INDEPENDENT LENS: THE WORLD ACCORDING TO SESAME STREET
Tuesday, October 24 at 9 p.m.

This documentary explores the drama and complexities behind producing international versions of the world's most popular children's television program. Created in cooperation with the series itself, this program illustrates how social impact can come from the most seemingly unlikely sources, including a team of Muppets.


SECRETS OF THE DEAD: CATASTROPHE!
PART 1 Wednesday, October 25 at 8 p.m.      
PART 2 Wednesday, November 1 at 8 p.m.

Scientists have uncovered evidence from around the world that indicates that the early Dark Ages may have been triggered by an actual event that occurred around 535 A.D.  Science writer David Keys believes that the cause was a natural phenomenon of cataclysmic proportions. Determined to discover the exact nature of this catastrophe, and to understand its political, economic and social repercussions, he embarks on a scientific odyssey.


P.O.V. : MY COUNTRY, MY COUNTRY
Wednesday, October 26 at 10 p.m.

Working alone in Iraq over eight months, filmmaker Laura Poitras has created an extraordinarily intimate portrait of Iraqis living under U.S. occupation. My Country, My Country, a powerful mosaic of daily life in Iraq not seen in the mainstream media.


AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: THE GREAT FEVER
Monday, October 30 at 9 p.m.

For more than 200 years, yellow fever was a disease that had terrorized the United States, killing an estimated 100,000 people in the 19th century alone. This program documents the heroic efforts leading to the first major public health triumph of the 20th century for the U.S.
