KLRN Spotlights

Fresh Cut 2007 Premieres in May
KLRN is airing the 6th installment of its Fresh Cut documentary series, showcasing the innovative video work of San Antonio-area high school students, on Thursday, May 17 at 9 p.m. The video pieces are about five minutes in length and range from documentary to drama, fable to fantasy, satire to news. Visit klrn.org/freshcut after the show to watch your favorite student work again!

This year’s program will include work from students at Brackenridge High School, Edgewood Academy, Judson School, North East School of the Arts, St. Mary’s Hall, Say Si, The Film School at Harlandale, and the Trevino School of Communications and Fine Arts.

KLRN would like to thank everyone that participated in this year's contest. Fresh Cut 2007 will air May 17 at 9 p.m., May 19 at 1:30 a.m., and May 21 at 4 a.m.

KLRN Launches New Spanish Language TV Channel V-Me
New to the KLRN family is V-me (pronounced 
 " veh-meh " ), a new, national Spanish-language television network that brings a new kind of quality educational programming to Latino viewers, featuring the best of public television. Through its relationships with world-class content producers and a unique partnership with American public television stations, V-me offers a fresh alternative in Spanish television that engages, entertains, empowers and inspires its viewers. KLRN launched the 24-hour digital broadcast network on April 2.  The new channel offers a rich blocks programming that can be found on KLRN’s digital channel 9.3 or on Time Warner Digital Cable 93 and 279.

Kids – High-quality Spanish-language preschool programs, educational online resources for children and parents, and local activities;

Lifestyle – Latino-focused food, travel, design, home and self improvement, parenting, health and well-being;

Factual and current affairs – Intelligent entertainment and opinions: history, technology, nature, current affairs, news and biography

Movies and special events – Contemporary Spanish-language films every night, plus international concerts and special events

Learning shouldn’t stop over the summer break, so encourage your young students and their parents to check out these fun and educational resources!

A Place of Our Own/Los Ninos En Su Casa
A Place of Our Own and Los Ninos en Su Casa, airing weekdays from 11:30 am to 12:30 p.m. on KLRN-TV, spotlight children and families to support education at home and contribute to children’s overall well-being. Several episodes feature segments produced locally that highlight resources right here in San Antonio.

Be Kind to Animals Celebration with CLIFFORD
Join KLRN and the Humane Society of San Antonio and Bexar County on Sun., May 6, 2007 from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m. to celebrate the launch of “Be Kind to Animals Week.” CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG is the guest of honor at this community celebration to raise awareness about responsible pet ownership. The event will include activity booths, storytime, tours of the facility, door prizes, food, and pictures with CLIFFORD. The event will take place at the Humane Society, 4804 Fredericksburg Rd. Early ON Event with Curious George
Early ON, a Kindergarten readiness project, will be holding a FREE community event on June 2 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Rosedale Park (340 Dartmouth) where children can participate in fun, educational activities and meet PBS’s Curious George! Don't forget to bring your camera! Visit

Early ON Event with Walkaround Rosita
Early ON, a Kindergarten readiness project, will be holding a FREE community event on July 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ingram Park Mall (6301 NW Loop 410) where children can participate in fun, educational activities and 195 families with tickets will have a chance to take one photograph with Sesame Street’s Walkaround Rosita! Tickets will be given on a first come, first serve basis. Walkaround Rosita will only be available for three showings, with 65 ticketed families per showing.  Don’t forget to bring your camera! Visit

NOVA: POCAHONTAS REVEALED

Virginia archaeologists have just discovered the site of Chief Powhatan's capital, Werowocomoco, some 17 miles from Jamestown beside the York River. This is the very spot where the captive John Smith had his famous life-and-death encounter with the mighty chief, in which (so the story goes) the smitten Pocahontas begged her father to spare the Englishman's neck. NOVA has covered the excavation of this unique site for four years and for the first time reveals the Native American side of the Jamestown story.


FRONTLINE: WHEN KIDS GET LIFE

The United States is one of the only countries in the world that allows children under 18 to be prosecuted as adults and sentenced to life without parole. In Colorado, between 1992 and 2005, 45 juveniles between 15 and 18 were sentenced to prison without the hope of ever being released. Producer Ofra Bikel visits five young men in Colorado sentenced to life without parole to examine their crimes and punishment, the laws that sanctioned their convictions, and the prospect of never being free again.

One of the most controversial men of his age, Alexander Hamilton’s life and career were marked by a stunning rise to power, scandal and tragedy. He had one of the most notorious love affairs of any public figure in American history and met his death in a startling act of political violence -- the famous duel with Aaron Burr. This program profiles an underappreciated genius who laid the groundwork for the nation's modern economy.

INDEPENDENT LENS: SENTENCED HOME
Tuesday, May 15 at 10 p.m.

Raised as Americans in inner city projects near Seattle, three young Cambodian refugees each made a rash decision as a teenager that irrevocably shaped their destiny. Years later, facing deportation back to Cambodia, they find themselves caught between a tragic past and an uncertain future by a system that doesn't offer any second chances.

CHURCHILL: DESTINY
Friday, May 18 at 10 p.m.

This first hour of this two part series tells the story of Churchill's early life – his aristocratic birth, his search for glory on the battlefield, his rise up the political ladder and his fall from it. This episode ends in 1931, when Churchill is left out of the national government, and his career seems to be over and his destiny unfulfilled.


DESIGN SQUAD: WINNER TAKES ALL
Sunday, May 20 at 2:30 p.m.

The season concludes when the product design firm Continuum asks the Design Squad teams to develop and test a "summer sled" for retail giant L.L. Bean. It's a bumpy, downhill slide to the finish line.


AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: THE GREAT TRANSATLANTIC CABLE
Monday, May 21 at 9 p.m.                     

This production tells the remarkable story behind the laying of the transatlantic cable. Since July 27, 1866, when the wire was finally in place, nothing has broken his communications link with Europe -- not storms, earthquakes or world wars.


CITY AT WAR

This documentary, hosted by Walter Cronkite, examines how American journalists reporting from London were instrumental in changing American public opinion and ultimately influencing America's decision to enter World War II to help the British.


UNTOLD TRIUMPH
Thursday, May 24 at 10 p.m.

This program documents and honors the 7,000 men of the 1st and 2nd Filipino Infantry Regiments of the U.S. Army who fought in World War II. A fitting testament to these brave soldiers, this film imparts touching personal accounts of the men's contributions and sacrifices during the war. More importantly, it inducts Filipino-American veterans into their rightful place in American history.


CHURCHILL: THE LION'S ROAR

The second hour focuses on the 10 years between 1929 and 1939, which have become widely known as the "Wilderness Years" during which Churchill was described as a "maverick", a "spent force" and a "fanatic".


FERNANDO BOTERO: THE REBEL
Tuesday, May 29 at 4:30 a.m.

Fernando Botero: The Rebel is an insightful and engaging film that invites us into the world of Latin America’s most celebrated artist. We learn about his childhood in Medellín, his first drawings, his journeys to Europe, his triumphs in New York, and his thoughts on life, art, and being Fernando Botero.


NOVA: VOLCANO ABOVE THE CLOUDS
Tuesday, May 29 at 8 p.m.

Just 200 miles south of the equator, Kilimanjaro has both equatorial and arctic conditions. Atop this peak, a young female geologist takes viewers back to the dawn of time and the formation of the African continent.
